What do I set my camera to take better macro photos?

I bought a Kodak Easyshare Z1012 IS just over a month and still I'm trying to figure out the macro setting on it. My old camera takes good pictures of macro with its macroeconomic environment, despite being a product rather Kodak oldest. Basically I'm asking around those who might know what to consult the manual coordination. Find the min. focus distance (which is 1 cm in my Pentax P & S). Test the macro focus mode, if that fails go to manual focus.
