What is a support in a camera flash to serve?

I'm interested in shooting some weddings and I often see photographers events supports their cameras flash. But I do not see why, exactly.

Two main objectives (Fhotoace only 1 of them). The first purpose is actually to keep the flash in a vertical alignment of the lens when the camera is in a landscape (horizontal) or a vertical position (camera sideways) position. By keeping the flash centered and vertical over the lens, which throws the shadow of the flash behind the person and below where you can not see so easily. In addition, a high flash position is more likely to be pleasant lighting, flash closer to the lens. One of the hallmarks of an amateur is the side of the annoying shadows, so that professionals use a flash bracket and maintain high-centered on the target. The other purpose is apparently to avoid eye red, although a hot shoe is usually far enough from the lens to avoid red-eye in a typical room just to be on the footing. A flash in a support also moves a little farther from the lens and helps prevent red-eye in the longer distances, which can be seen in a church, for example (ie, more larger than a normal room, where the photographer is above).
