Is there any way to use Canon 580EX flash from the camera and the installation manual?

I use the ST-E2 transmitter. Every time I hit "slave" and can not set manual flash settings. Oh, I do not use a cable. I have the ST-E2 wireless transmitter that works well Ettl when firing.
