Character Photo

Character Photography presents a new and different style of actor headshots for the Los Angeles market.

Generally there are two types of headshots.  The first is full on "character shots" that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination and little room for flexibility in the eyes of casting directors and agents.  At the extreme end these photos are of the actor dressed as a police officer, dressed as a nurse or in a judge's robe.  These types of shots are often used by full-time extras to show that they own their own wardrobe.

The second type of headshot is just of an actor looking at a camera.  At best, these capture the personality of the actor.  At worst, they are just glorified portrait sessions that capture the actor as she might look if she were captured by a portrait photographer in a mall.  These headshots may be good for capturing the personality of the actor but do little to suggest how the actress might be cast.

Character Photography combines the best of these two styles, suggesting the character the actor might be cast for while still allowing the true personality of the actor to shine through.

Before your session a skilled photographer will walk you through your decisions on wardrobe and character choices by looking at your old headshots and discussing the roles you typically audition for and/or would like to target in the future.

On the day of your session, approach each of your "looks" as different auditions.  Figure out how you would wear your hair for the audition, makeup (if any) and wardrobe styles to suggest the part.  You will work with the photographer on each look until you both feel you have achieved the results you desire.

When your session is done you will sit down with the photographer to browse through your photographs and he will give you his professional opinion on which would market you best for each type.

You will leave with a CD of all your images and suggestions on where (and how) to get the best reproductions.  Your images will also be archived with the photographer, in case something happens to your copy of the CD.

Also, you will notice there is a "blog" on this site.  Every single actor photographed by Character Photography will have a dedicated blog entry showing one of their photos and discussing the process used to achieve the look and how this will help the actor in the future.  This is a marketing tool for both the actor and the photographer.  When your headshots help you book jobs in the future please e-mail Character Photography so we can share your success story on our blog.  And of course, every entry on our blog will include a link to your acting website (if you have one).
