There are many different communities in Los Angeles, each retaining the richness of their native cultures yet assimilating into the culture of the United States.

No community is an example of this more than the Russian community in Los Angeles. It also has the distinction of being one of the five largest Russian communities in the U.S. and is the largest located on the West Coast. Its population is in the neighborhood of 600,000.

The love of his language is evident in Russian-language publications in the media print and online presence they have. A quick Google search for the Russian community in LA at the same time, large numbers of Russian editions of directories, services and websites of Russian culture.

There are plenty of Russian cuisine restaurants like retail stores and companies offering services of almost every kind. There are even companies operated specifically to help new immigrants adjust to their new life in America and ensure they have all the documents needed to work, finding housing and all they need. Services are provided to help start new businesses in the community.

An industry where the Russian community has really made his mark in the entertainment industry. Many well know people in show business whether immigrant or are the children of Russian immigrants.

Michael Chekhov, nephew of the famous Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov came to Los Angeles from Moscow. Mike came Mazurki United States with his parents in 1915 and had an acting career that lasted 60 years. Who can forget the legendary stars Eddie Cantor and Al Jolson?

Others, some of which may surprise, include people of more recent fame and the fame of a more vintage. There are Leonard Nimoy, Ed Asner, Walter Matthau, Leon Ames, Sylvia Sidney, Karl Malden, Phil Silvers, Natalie Wood, Laurence Harvey, Yul Brynner, Gregory Peck, Harrison Ford, Kirk Douglas, Efrem Zimbalist Jr.

Actors above are well known but far from being the only Russian-Americans in the entertainment industry. There are also producers, directors, writers, business and many other professionals critical to display.

There is great diversity of religion within the community. There are Russian Orthodox Christians, Russian Jews, the Muslims, secularists and many more. With the diversity that exists within the Russian community in Los Angeles, appears to be a melting pot in the crucible of the U.S.
