Waist Level

Waist Level

Recently I had a real desire to reuse a viewfinder at waist level. When I went medium format back a few years ago and went from 120 films in roll to digital, I thought I would not want to look back, but something has been on me lately.

Digital SLR cameras are a major obstacle bulky between the photographer and subject. I'm beginning to think I could make better pictures of people you do not have this piece of metal and glass in front of my face. The camera medium format, which took place around the waist has never caused this problem.

However, it has an 'image problem'. As a result of TV commercials and print some others associated with the idea that wedding photographers were on average dodderers blind, struggling to focus through jam-jar-thick glasses, with a shaky tripod, old wood. This was far from the truth then and is certainly not true now. It'sa job that requires a brain alert and a certain level of physical energy to do well. It was also easier for manufacturers of 35mm cameras to continue working with existing lenses (for start), maintaining the same bayonets and camera design based on the previous models of 35 mm.

I'm not the only one who thinks well on the waist-visors level. I've heard from other photographers talking about how they were moved to make images at the waist. They have, however, doing this without benefit of a viewer for compose, as I do on occasion. With the camera at the waist, it is much easier to interact with people. This is very useful when making portraits and makes a real difference in making documentary wedding photos.

I am especially happy with my current digital SLR, but I think I could make my next move purchase of the camera on the basis of a position of the adjustable screen and live view.
