Because color has a tremendous emotional impact and effects on mood and look of their importance in the design of dress is, no doubt, and because of its importance, good to learn something about it.

Color Science

Color comes from light reflected from the visible spectrum radiant energy produced by waves electromagnetic. Light and color are composed of atoms that travel in waves at a speed of more than 186,000 miles per second.

Various colors in the visible spectrum are of different wavelengths – red has the longest wave length and violet the shortest the human eye can see. White is the reflected light of all colors combined spectrum, and black is the absence of any reflected light and color.

COLOR LIGHTING

The use of colors in the illumination of color difference pigment or paint – and mix very differently. In the light of the primary colors are red, blue and yellow – but BLUE, GREEN AND YELLOW RED.

Blue, green, yellow and red light combined produce white light. Combined blue and green light produces blue-green, blue and yellow, purple, red produce, green and yellow, red produces yellow.

Red filters absorb all colors except red, which passes through, green filter absorbs all but green, blue filter absorbs everything but blue, and yellow filter absorbs all but red and green, passing through the filter in combination with yellow.

Green and red color filters combined, absorb and stop the passage of all colors. The same thing happens when you combine blue and yellow filters.

For anyone involved with the design of dress that is going to create costumes for the theater, is of paramount importance to know how the colors of their costumes will react to the colors used for stage lighting.

PAINT COLOR

In pigments, the substance is used to paint or color of our material, primary colors are red, yellow and blue. These are the colors which it can reproduce all the colors of the spectrum. Besides these, chromatic colors, we have the achromatic or neutral colors ranging from black through various shades of gray to white.

When these are mixed with one or more other, in various proportions and combinations we can get large variations in hue, value and intensity.

Combined Colors

The primary colors are red, yellow and blue.

The secondary colors are halfway between each primary color: the mixture of yellow and red have orange. A mixture of red and blue receiving purple. Mixing blue with green have yellow.

The tertiary colors are halfway between each primary and secondary color:
Yellow and orange produce yellow-orange.
Orange and red produce orange-red.
Red and purple-red produce purple.
Purple and blue produce violet-blue.
Blue and green produce blue-green.
Green and yellow produce yellow-green.

The following pairs of complementary colors together:

 Red Green and yellow-orange and blue-violet  Yellow and purple-red purple and yellow-green  Blue and red-orange orange and blue-green 

COLOR SENSE

HUE is the name of a particular color to distinguish it from other like red from blue, pink or violet, etc.

VALUE expresses ringing tones, or shades of any particular color or tone, ranging from very light – almost white, but with a slight tinge of color – very dark, almost black.

Intensity represents the purity of a color – color that is not neutralized or softened by mixing with its complement.

HARMONY is the dominant characteristic of color harmony different values of the same color. Soft effects are achieved by combining the color values closest and the most notable effects on values farther

With these guidelines, those involved in the design of clothing will be able to choose the colors you need and have the most effect.
